• This course offers a compact survey of authors and texts instrumental to the development of western modernity. I’ve selected works that contextualize the transition to modernity and help to forge the scientific, philosophical, and ethical-political ideals of the modern world. Our task in the course is dual: to read our authors -- including Galileo, Descartes, Hume, and Nietzsche, among others – from an historical perspective, in order to understand the broad narratives of modernity, and to read them philosophically, in order to understand and critically evaluate their arguments through writing and conversation.
